Ohakune

I took a weekend away to Ohakune, which means 'Place to be Careful' in Maori.  This village is situated on a volcanic plateau and is 366km. or about 4.5 hours drive from Auckland

This page, and those that follow along the same theme, are dedicated to my best friend who made this weekend possible - Thank you Sonskyn!

The view at dawn from Cascades Motor Lodge, across Lake Taupo
towards Mt Ruapehu

A serene image of an Australian Black Swan

Bayview Chateau Tongariro which lies close to Whakapapa ski field on the
slopes of Mt Ruapehu was built in 1929 and is one of New Zealand's most
historic hotels and national icons

This is truly where my adventure began ......

An imposing 'Big Carrot' icon.  Being the largest producers
of carrots, Ohakune is traditionally known as the
'Carrot Capital' of New Zealand

Ohakune Village with its interesting wrought iron street lamps, and where every
shop has a woodburner.  This village has a population of 2,500 which swells to
near 20,000 when Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields open during winter

An interesting looking building decorated with wrought iron leaf shapes

And then the rain came ........

The beautiful and cosy Powderhorn Chateau with beautiful wood exterior and interior,
warm colours and great spare ribs, is on the doorstep of the Tongariro National
Park and the closest accommodation to the Turoa Ski Fields

The Mangawhero river in front of the Powderhorn Chateau

Going up to the Turoa Ski Field

We only got as far as about 11km where the road was blocked off
due to bad weather and black ice

However, bad weather could not steal away the winter wonderland
